When it comes time to sell your home in Corpus Christi, Texas, you might find that you're not attracting as many buyers as you thought you would. If interest doesn't pick up, you might have to call up your Spokane, Washington real estate agent and tell him not to bother finding you a new house. But before you take that drastic step, look at your house to make sure you're not exhibiting any obvious no-nos that are immediately turning off buyers. Here are the top three turnoffs that will immediately send buyers running for the hills. If your house has any, you'd better get them fixed if you plan on selling your house at all.

Dampness

If your house has a problem with moisture buildup, it will be immediately obvious to the buyer as soon as she enters the house because of the smell. If you've got dampness in your basement, this is a dead giveaway to buyers that your foundation is not holding up. Dampness causes mold and mildew to form on walls, ceilings, and in the spaces between walls, even if you've got lead-lined drywall. This can cause major health problems for anyone living in the house, especially if they have allergies. Attics are often another problem area for moisture. If you've noticed mold, mildew, or a funny smell, it's time to install an air circulation unit and seal your basement.

Darkness

It's one thing if you favor darker teak pieces from Kingsley Bate Furniture in Toronto and quite another if your home is dim and grim. Paint your home in light colors when you're selling to make it seem brighter and bring in more lamps and lighting for rooms without adequate natural light. Obviously if you live in Merton Street Condos you can't add more windows, but if you live in a house you might want to consider it. Buyers like houses that are airy and light, so if you can't read a book comfortably in every room, it's a major turnoff.

Pests

If buyers see any type of pest - a cockroach, a mouse, or even if they hear a squirrel in the attic - you've lost them, no ifs ands or buts. You have no business selling a home that's infested. "But the whole Islington Village neighborhood has bed bugs" is no excuse. If you know you've got a pest infestation (and you'll know) then it's your duty to have it eradicated before you put your house on the market. Often it's as simple as calling the pest control company to come in and fumigate, but other times you might need minor repairs to stop up the gaps where they're coming in.
